Update preview: Multiple monitor support, video game controller emulation, and environment system updates
I got a lot of work in this weekend, but no new release for this week. I've got a few bug fixes in the new content before it's ready for the public. I did want to update everyone on what I worked on though, cause I think it's pretty awesome.
Most noticeable is the desktop viewer now supports multiple independent screens. On Windows 8 and below you can create an arbitrary number of screens, on Win10 you'll be limited to the same number of actual monitors you have. I'm going to try and get around that at some point, but I'm kind of surprised it works as well as it does right now.
I also updated the mouse simulation. Things like double clicking and right clicking now work a lot better.
That's where I left off on Saturday. My plan was to do some clean up work today, then get Alpha 0.4 built and uploaded. I woke up with a different idea however.
After playing around with the mouse settings and getting my head wrapped around how that system works again. I realized at this point it'd be pretty easy to simulate a video game controller as well. So I went to work throughout today.
I'm pretty pleased with how well it works. I need to move the pause button, and I suspect it would be a bit smoother on the index controllers with their thumb sticks. But I'm perfectly able to play SNES games with it.
The cool thing is the game is sending real key press signals and using a regular desktop emulator. From the emulator's perspective it looks like you're playing completely normally with a keyboard. What that means is that any game which can be played with 10ish keys can be played with this system. SNES and similar emulators are obvious, but modern games like Stardew Valley, Terraria, and similar should work as well.
Lastly the environment system has finally been updated to use regular old panoramic .PNGs. You can even download a new panorama to the environments folder with the desktop viewer, and immediately switch to the new environment. All from inside the game.
This week takes the game way closer to what I want it to be. I think it's really starting to show off the strengths and possibilities of VR. Hopefully I can get things cleaned up and released to you guys this time next week.
